The Ph.D. in American Studies and Culture at Washington State University requires candidates to possess an undergraduate degree in American Studies or a closely aligned discipline from the humanities or social sciences. The program's objectives include developing broad familiarity with American cultural heritage while enabling focused research in key domains: Latina/o/x and Latin American Studies, Ethnic Cultural Studies, Cultural Texts, Linguistics and Theory, as well as Asia, Asian America, and Pacific Rim studies.

Three Letters of Recommendation
Request letters on institutional letterhead from persons capable of evaluating your qualifications for graduate study, professional potential, and, if applying for a teaching assistantship, your abilities as a teacher. Once you submit your application, your references will be contacted automatically through the online application system and asked to submit a recommendation form electronically.
Academic Transcripts
Your most recent undergraduate and/or relevant graduate transcripts. If you attended Washington State University, you do not need to submit transcripts from WSU as these are available to the Graduate School.
Language Proficiency (for international students)
Please have TOEFL scores sent to the WSU Graduate School directly from the Educational Testing Service.
Neither the GRE nor any other standardized test is a requirement for admission to the American studies program.
Applicants with at least a B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) grade point Avg, or the equivalent in the last 60 graded semester (90 quarter) hours, from an accredited college or university, or at least a B grade point Avg in any graduate work from a recognized graduate school are eligible for admission to regular student status. Applicants with at least 12 semester hours of approved coursework from accredited graduate schools with at least a B grade point Avg are eligible for admission to regular student status.
