Researchers in humanities and social sciences who favor cross-disciplinary approaches have consistently discovered an academic haven in American Studies, alongside those exploring emerging or avant-garde disciplines. The field has equally served as a scholarly base and testing ground for individuals passionate about critical theory, public humanities, advocacy, curation, media studies, journalism, and other areas. Driven by the mission to harness academic work for social equity, American Studies cultivates scholar-activists who critically examine structures of power including race, gender, nationality, and other frameworks. Mirroring the evolution of this nearly hundred-year-old discipline, Indiana University's American Studies PhD program merges rigorous scholarship, interdisciplinary perspectives, and avenues for innovative inquiry.
