Washington State University pioneered the nation's first organic and sustainable agriculture degree program. This interdisciplinary major combines natural sciences, environmental studies, economics, and social sciences with specialized coursework in organic farming methods. As a rapidly expanding sector that contrasts sharply with conventional farming, organic agriculture finds strong representation in Washington State's innovative agricultural landscape. The program attracts students seeking practical learning opportunities through its working organic farm - a four-acre certified facility where students grow organic produce distributed to campus dining services, food banks, a 100-member CSA program, and local markets. WSU is expanding its organic farming resources with the development of the 30-acre Eggert Family Organic Farm, featuring diverse crops, livestock operations, orchards, and research facilities. These working farms serve as living laboratories for students while providing research opportunities and community engagement with sustainable agricultural practices.
