The Soils and Sustainable Land Systems major equips students with knowledge about the physical, chemical, and biological interactions within the earth's surface soil-water-atmosphere system. USU stands as the sole institution in the state providing soil science degrees, with a distinctive concentration on water challenges in the arid West. The program emphasizes research areas including urban/rural land use, erosion control, agricultural waste solutions, soil moisture assessment, and soil formation.
Graduates of this program will be prepared for professional roles involving environmental soil and water conservation, analysis, and enhancement. Soil specialists collaborate with engineers, geologists, and ecologists, offering critical insights on construction techniques for diverse soil conditions, efficient irrigation methods, and more. They also contribute significantly to preserving soil quality and water purity for present and future populations.
With intimate class settings, the program allows for personalized faculty mentorship and hands-on laboratory research opportunities that build practical experience. Students earn a degree upon fulfilling all major requirements. For a BA degree, additional foreign language proficiency is required.
