The painting program adopts a cross-disciplinary method for artistic expression and serves as a specialization option for students pursuing either BA or BFA degrees.
Students explore how their creative work relates to broader fine arts and modern cultural landscapes. Foundational courses cultivate observational painting abilities while addressing key elements like composition, color theory, and brushwork techniques.
Introductory classes additionally foster personal connections with art historical movements and current artistic practices, enabling students to situate their creations within wider social and historical frameworks.
As students progress, they receive guidance in cultivating distinctive artistic voices. Upper-level painting courses focus on developing unified portfolios that reflect personal viewpoints shaped by contemporary art concepts.
Regular critiques with WSU art professors, peer discussions, collaborative interdisciplinary projects, and group activities enhance students' ability to articulate and refine their artistic visions.
The program provides spacious, naturally-lit studio spaces throughout students' education, along with instruction in professional framing and canvas preparation methods.
