Cultivate a spirit of intellectual inquiry, analytical abilities, and a deep respect for the humanistic traditions of global cultures through an immersive French language curriculum. WSU's French program delivers thorough, hands-on language instruction while fostering curiosity, sharpening critical thinking, and nurturing an understanding of international cultures, particularly those of French-speaking regions. Our curriculum spans introductory to advanced language classes, alongside studies in French and Francophone literature, cinema, and cultural studies, all led by fluent French-speaking instructors.
Learners can pursue a B.A. in Foreign Languages with a French concentration through either the Language (non-teaching) Track or the Teaching Track. The Language Track combines rigorous linguistic training with explorations of French literary works, films, and cultural traditions. The Teaching Track prepares future educators for French language instruction in K-12 settings. Additionally, students may opt for a professional dual major in French, which equips them with the linguistic proficiency and cultural knowledge needed for professional engagements with French-speaking colleagues.
The department also provides three minor options: French Language Studies, French for Fashion & Retail, and French Cultural Studies. The first emphasizes language acquisition, the second caters to Apparel, Merchandising, Design & Textile (AMDT) majors pursuing careers involving French connections, while the third combines intermediate language coursework with English-taught classes on French arts and society.
Prospective students for any program are urged to consult with our academic advisors or faculty mentors.
Those with prior French education should complete our Online Placement Test, which may qualify them for advanced standing and potential credit through our Advanced Placement policy upon successful completion of their initial WSU French course.
