During their initial year, Ph.D. candidates focus on crafting their research proposal while participating in our Integrative Biology program to prepare for presenting their First-Year Prospectus. Every doctoral student forms a five-member faculty Advisory Committee to provide ongoing research guidance. Typically in the second year, students undertake the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination, collaborating with their committee to demonstrate their expertise via comprehensive written assessments, revisions, and oral defenses. By the third year, scholars refine their research strategy and submit a Third-Year Prospectus, serving as an initial version of their eventual dissertation or funding application. The program culminates with students finishing their written thesis and delivering both a departmental seminar and final committee presentation.
