The Biological Sciences graduate program equips students with comprehensive training in core biological disciplines, offering immersive research opportunities alongside our faculty using cutting-edge techniques. Our curriculum readies graduates for diverse scientific careers, spanning academic research, education, government roles, and expanding biotechnology fields. Through dissertation projects, coursework, seminars, and professional development initiatives, students cultivate analytical abilities and specialized technical competencies.
Faculty research within the Biological Sciences Department spans multiple scales - from molecular and cellular studies to organismal and ecological investigations. This breadth enables our adaptable graduate curriculum, where students and advisors collaboratively design personalized academic trajectories. The program incorporates mandatory teaching experience, requiring all graduate candidates to serve as teaching assistants for at least one term.
During their initial year, graduate students undertake coursework, professional skill-building activities, and rotational lab projects. This multifaceted approach fosters broad biological knowledge while helping students pinpoint their research focus. Subsequently, they choose a faculty advisor and commence dissertation work in their selected laboratory. Detailed PhD completion requirements are outlined in the curriculum section of our website.
Applicant must have undergraduate programs emphasizing biological sciences, chemistry, mathematics, or physics course work, but students from other disciplines are also eligible.
