The Chemistry Department consistently ranks among the best in its field for degrees awarded (BA, BS, MS, and PhD) and research funding. With 30 faculty and 140 graduate students, we publish over 100 peer-reviewed articles annually and have received many distinguished honors for research, education, and community engagement. Beyond traditional chemistry disciplines (analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical), our polymer chemistry program ranks in the top 5 nationally, with strong interdisciplinary initiatives in drug development, computational chemistry, surface studies, sustainable energy, and chemical biology.
The Macromolecules and Interfaces Institute (MII) unites faculty and students across campus with shared interests in polymer science, engineering, adhesion studies, and related fields. The Virginia Tech Center for Drug Discovery (VTCDD) fosters collaboration to expand and enhance the university's drug development initiatives. Supported by NSF funding, the Molecular Sciences Software Institute (MolSSI) serves as a hub for research, education, and collaboration in computational molecular sciences worldwide. GlycoMIP, an NSF Materials Innovation Platform, is both a national research facility and multidisciplinary program tackling key challenges in glycomaterials science.
