The United States leads global chemical production, responsible for approximately 20% of worldwide output. Huntsville and its neighboring areas serve as the southern hub for the nation's chemical sector. Earning a graduate degree in Chemistry elevates your expertise and capabilities, preparing you for leadership positions.
A graduate degree expands upon a student's solid scientific background, substantially boosting their understanding and technical abilities. This advanced qualification creates new opportunities. Degree holders typically secure higher-level positions, and in many cases, graduate education becomes essential for breaking through specific career barriers.
The MS in Chemistry program features intensive coursework and hands-on laboratory training across organic, physical, inorganic, and analytical chemistry, plus specialization options in biochemistry, polymer chemistry, or materials science. Participants develop leadership skills through roles as teaching assistants or by mentoring undergraduates in research settings. The curriculum emphasizes mastering written communication of chemical concepts and delivering compelling research presentations. Graduates find themselves well-prepared for rewarding careers or advanced studies in PhD or professional degree programs.

Qualification Requirements

General requirements of the Graduate School must be satisfied. In addition, students admitted to the graduate chemistry program are assumed to have training equivalent to the chemistry B.S. degree recommended by the American Chemical Society. The degree includes lecture and laboratory work in organic chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, polymer chemistry, and materials chemistry. Graduation from an undergraduate program not adhering to ACS standards does not preclude entrance into the UAH program. Students should realize, however, that if deficiencies exist, some additional undergraduate courses might be required. The time required to complete the M.S. degree may then be proportionately increased.
A bachelor's degree, or equivalent, from an approved institution. A minimum grade point average of a 3.0 on the undergraduate record.
