The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program spans three years, allowing students to focus on either Fiction or Poetry. This terminal degree requires completion of at least 49 credit hours. The curriculum includes creative writing workshops, form and theory courses, digital writing studies, composition pedagogy, and literature/theory electives, tailored for aspiring professional writers or academic writer-scholars. Participants may serve as editors for publications like the Minnesota Review and The New River: a Journal of Digital Writing and Art. Degree requirements include a creative thesis, written examination, and oral defense.
This MFA program aims to cultivate a vibrant creative environment by: facilitating mentorship with faculty writers, developing awareness of contemporary creative writing trends, fostering collaborative writing communities in Southwest Virginia, and equipping students with professional publication skills for poetry and fiction collections. Additionally, the program provides foundational training for collegiate teaching careers.
