Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) is a field that integrates biology, chemistry, and physics with engineering principles to address challenges in living systems. The department's goal is to create and share engineering solutions that safeguard ecosystems while enhancing the sustainable creation, processing, and use of biological materials. Our researchers and students explore diverse biological environments, from natural water systems and watershed management to engineered structures like bioreactors. Our work spans from microscopic to large-scale applications. We aim to enhance health across species and ecosystems by innovating in food safety, vaccine development, renewable energy, advanced materials, and water conservation. By transforming biological resources—including crops, proteins, and waste—into valuable outputs like medicines, clean energy, and sustainable materials, we promote environmentally responsible practices.
