The Engineering Mechanics (EM) curriculum offers a robust base and cross-disciplinary approach for advancing knowledge in material mechanics, fluid dynamics, structural vibrations, biomechanics, and computational techniques. Housed within the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (BEAM), the EM program is dedicated to fostering an academic atmosphere that prioritizes core principles, excellence in instruction, cutting-edge research, creative problem-solving, and support for the mechanics profession. Equipping EM graduates with both deep technical expertise and adaptable skills prepares them for diverse career paths in industry, research institutions, and academia. Alumni of the program teach and investigate in universities worldwide, establish and manage businesses across global markets, contribute to governmental and private sector laboratories, advise policymakers at all levels of government, hold influential roles in technical organizations, and champion the importance of engineering science in strengthening Virginia's and the nation's technological leadership.
