The Chemistry Department maintains a leading position among comparable institutions for both degree output (BA, BS, MS, and PhD) and research funding. With 30 faculty members and 140 graduate students, we produce more than 100 peer-reviewed publications annually and have received many distinguished honors for research, education, and community engagement. Beyond the core chemistry disciplines (analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical), our polymer chemistry program ranks in the top 5 nationally, with robust initiatives in interdisciplinary fields such as pharmaceutical research, computational chemistry, surface science, sustainable energy, and chemical biology.
The Macromolecules and Interfaces Institute (MII) serves as a university-wide research hub, uniting dozens of faculty and over 100 students focused on polymer science, adhesion technology, and related fields. The Virginia Tech Center for Drug Discovery (VTCDD) fosters collaboration to expand and elevate the university's existing drug development initiatives. Supported by NSF funding, the Molecular Sciences Software Institute (MolSSI) acts as a central resource for the worldwide computational molecular sciences community. GlycoMIP, an NSF Materials Innovation Platform, operates as both a national research facility and multidisciplinary program tackling key challenges in glycomaterials science.
