The Master of Teaching programs are structured to provide qualification for initial teaching certification in Virginia, covering early childhood, elementary, or secondary education (with specializations in biology, chemistry, earth science, English, history, social studies, mathematics, or physics). These accredited programs encompass both prerequisite undergraduate coursework and graduate studies. Students enrolled in the extended track receive their bachelor's and graduate degrees concurrently, while those who already hold a bachelor's degree and meet admission requirements can pursue the Master of Teaching program along with its prerequisite courses. This dual-degree pathway demands a minimum of 153-154 credit hours, with no fewer than 33 credits at the graduate level.
In addition to the general admission requirements of the VCU Graduate School, the following requirements represent the minimum acceptable standards for admission:
Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (B.I.S.) degree with a liberal studies for early and elementary education major
Three letters of recommendation addressing the student’s potential for graduate study in education
Statement of intent
Transcripts of all previous college work
