VCU's School of the Arts Department of Interior Design aims to deliver a challenging, studio-focused education centered on interior architecture principles. The program cultivates in students a lasting enthusiasm for their craft, a commitment to excellence, thoughtful self-reflection, and accountability for continuous learning. Students gain specialized professional skills while exploring broader cultural and environmental contexts that enhance their work. The post-professional track, a specialized pathway within the interior environments concentration (one of only approximately ten nationwide), offers advanced study opportunities for graduates with interior design or architecture degrees to pursue tailored academic directions. This selective program admits only candidates who have shown exceptional undergraduate or master's-level achievement.

Qualification Requirements

Departments may admit graduate applicants with three-year bachelor’s degrees provided these three-year degrees allow the students to pursue graduate studies in their countries. Further, the department will require prerequisite/foundation courses as needed to fill in any gaps in the student’s educational background. For admission to graduate study at VCU, the Graduate School requires an undergraduate GPA of 3.0. or better, however, an individual department may waive this requirement as identified through a holistic review of an application. For students with earned graduate degrees from accredited institutions, the graduate GPA may be the primary basis for consideration. Three letters of recommendation are required and should be submitted online by an applicant's recommenders. In the University Graduate Application applicants will enter the recommender names and email addresses to send a message requesting the recommendations.

Letters of recommendation from professional associates such as instructors, supervisors, or colleagues should address the applicant’s ability to succeed in a graduate program, as well as describe specific experiences with the applicant that would translate to being an outstanding candidate for the M.F.A. in Design with a concentration in interior environments post-professional program.
