The Bachelor of Science in Physics program mandates completion of at least 120 credit hours, with 54 credits dedicated to physics and related coursework as outlined in the curriculum. This physics program equips students for professional opportunities in physics-related fields, engineering positions, and secondary school physics instruction. The program also provides foundational preparation for advanced studies in physics or similar disciplines. Graduates will achieve the following competencies:Apply scientific logic and advanced problem-solving techniques
Physics students gain core knowledge across key physics domains, preparing them for careers involving physics-based technologies. They develop expertise in technical problem-solving by breaking down complex systems into manageable components governed by established physical principles, then applying these principles to model overall system behavior.
Exhibit comprehensive knowledge of fundamental physics concepts
Develop effective written and verbal communication skills for explaining technical analyses
Acquire scientific literacy capabilities including researching, comprehending, and evaluating scientific literature
Master information processing skills by creating and analyzing data presented through various formats including tables, charts, diagrams, and simulations
VCU applications for admissions and scholarship consideration will be reviewed based on academic performance at an accredited high school or on GED scores. The college preparatory curriculum is highly preferred. Extracurricular activities and employment experience may strengthen an application.
Essays are required of all applicants and must be submitted with the Common Application. At least one recommendation is preferred for all applicants. Applicants will be asked to submit recommender information before submitting the Common Application. Recommenders will be sent an email on the applicant’s behalf requesting a recommendation. First-year applicants are required to submit an up-to-date high school transcript (including senior-year curriculum and grades, if available). GED holders must submit their official GED scores.
