The Physics Department boasts exceptional faculty and resources to deliver robust programs for students pursuing a physics major. Our curriculum features diverse course offerings and specialized tracks, with multiple introductory options, core upper-level classes, and advanced electives. Students can choose from three distinct tracks to customize their major according to their aspirations—whether preparing for graduate studies, entering the workforce, exploring interdisciplinary fields, or pursuing other paths. Two tracks lead to a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree, ideal for those seeking technical expertise: the 'Professional' track provides in-depth training in core physics concepts, while the 'Applied' track incorporates interdisciplinary coursework from other departments based on a chosen focus area. A third track culminates in a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, enabling students to combine physics with non-technical fields like education, media, or business, with guidance from departmental advisors.
Our program features a wide selection of courses across three specialized tracks, covering both foundational physics and practical skill development—including technical writing, presentations, coding, data interpretation, and lab design. Beyond mastering these competencies and core subjects, our majors gain exceptional training in analytical reasoning, theoretical modeling, and quantitative evaluation. For years, UMass has surveyed alumni about their acquired knowledge and abilities. Physics graduates consistently rate our program highly for fostering critical and analytical thinking, tackling intricate challenges, and interpreting numerical and statistical data.
