The Microbe-Host Interactions Ph.D. program aims to establish itself as a premier biomedical research hub by making groundbreaking discoveries and providing cutting-edge training for aspiring scientists. This initiative grew from recognizing that although microorganisms are an inseparable part of our global ecosystem, we can work toward eliminating avoidable and curable infectious diseases. Our primary objective is to educate students in analyzing the complex relationships between microbes—particularly bacteria and viruses—and their hosts, whether these interactions result in illness or support wellbeing.
Supported by the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, MHI researchers have pioneered advanced experimental models to investigate fundamental processes in bacterial and viral disease development. A major departmental focus involves leveraging data from human and microbial genome studies to uncover novel genes influencing infection dynamics and patient health outcomes.
This graduate program ensures students gain comprehensive expertise in their chosen specialization (such as bacterial disease mechanisms or viral reproduction), while also developing a strong foundation in host biology to fully comprehend pathogen-host relationships. As a research-focused curriculum, MHI prioritizes teaching core scientific principles essential for conducting hypothesis-based investigations. Students additionally benefit from regular seminars featuring leading experts and participate in journal clubs analyzing current advancements across scientific disciplines.
Qualified applicants with bachelor’s or comparable non-U.S. degrees are eligible for admission to the Graduate School. Applications from international students with three-year bachelor’s degrees will also be considered.
The minimum acceptable score on the paper-based TOEFL is 570, and for the Internet-based test, 88. Many programs, however, require a considerably higher level of proficiency.
For IELTS, the minimum acceptable score will vary by program. In many cases, a score of at least 7.0 is desirable.
