Vanderbilt's Philosophy Department provides diverse courses connecting philosophical thought to various aspects of human experience. The program particularly focuses on influential philosophers and movements that have shaped Western intellectual traditions.
Students can customize their major according to their academic goals. Required coursework includes: Logic (1003 or 3003 - minimum 3 credits), Ethics (1005, 3605, or 3606 - minimum 3 credits), and History of Philosophy (2100-2104 - minimum 6 credits). Any modifications require approval from the undergraduate studies director. Majors should collaborate with advisors to create a focused academic plan. A minimum of 30 philosophy credits is required, with at least 21 credits at the 2000 level or above.
