The social studies (composite teaching) major offers certification to teach history, geography, psychology, sociology, economics, and political science. Graduates with this degree meet rigorous federal No Child Left Behind requirements to instruct across these disciplines. The curriculum spans multiple departments, ensuring comprehensive exposure to all subject areas. This diverse expertise enhances graduates' employment prospects, making them attractive candidates for middle and high school positions due to their ability to teach various subjects. The degree is awarded upon completion of all major requirements. For a BA, students must additionally demonstrate competency in one or more foreign languages. To qualify for a secondary teaching license (grades 6-12), candidates must finish the 30-credit Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP), featuring a semester of student teaching in public schools.
This program eliminates the need for a minor, as its interdisciplinary approach equips students with knowledge across multiple fields, broadening their professional opportunities.
