Civil engineers are responsible for planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining public infrastructure like roads, bridges, and harbors. In addition to construction, they assess environmental impacts and ensure structural resilience against natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. The department's curriculum encompasses five key disciplines: environmental engineering, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, and water resources engineering. Students are required to achieve proficiency in at least two of these fields. As they train for careers in civil engineering, students will acquire skills to:
Design or oversee the building of bridges, buildings, dams, aqueducts, sports facilities, energy complexes, irrigation and transportation networks (including highways, canals, rapid transit systems, etc.), among other projects
Create water resources for municipal, industrial, and recreational purposes
Engage in land reclamation, soil mechanics, and urban development planning
Preserve water quality through purification and effective waste treatment
Address challenges related to air pollution and the management of solid and hazardous waste
The civil engineering program is accredited by the EAC Accreditation Commission of ABET. Graduates from USU's engineering programs enjoy an exceptionally high job placement rate.
Combined Bachelor's and Master's Program:
The department also provides a combined bachelor's and master's program, enabling USU engineering students to start graduate coursework in their senior undergraduate year and fulfill requirements for both degrees simultaneously within a two-year period.
The APE is structured to fulfill the prerequisites for the initial two years of a Baccalaureate Degree.
