The American studies program equips students with an advanced comprehension of the forces, narratives, and connections that define North American societies throughout history and today.
Graduates can pursue diverse career paths in cultural institutions, legal fields, public service, conservation areas, arts administration, nonprofit sectors, and educational environments. Offering concentrations in Western American culture, cross-border regions, historical perspectives, literary traditions, folk arts, documentary writing, visual culture studies, and ecological approaches, this interdisciplinary program encourages students to design academic paths that transcend both temporal and spatial limits. While administratively part of the English Department, American studies majors engage with courses across multiple university disciplines. The curriculum includes an 18-credit specialization (which may double as a minor) in approved subjects spanning creative arts, humanistic inquiry, or social science fields. To support professional development, the program facilitates extensive internship placements across various academic disciplines, offering both domestic and international opportunities.Upon fulfilling all major requirements, students earn a degree. Bachelor of Arts candidates must additionally demonstrate competence in one or more non-native languages.
