Individuals completing degrees in early childhood education become eligible to instruct in preschool environments and can obtain certification to teach from kindergarten through third grade. The curriculum provides comprehensive training in early childhood education topics, with students selecting a specialization area for deeper study. While multiple specializations are possible, only one is mandatory.
Practical training through practicums and fieldwork is also required. Utah State's early childhood education program stands out by allowing students to begin working with children during their first year, unlike most universities where such experience typically starts in the junior year. Upon graduation, students will have accumulated over 600 hours across eight distinct practicum placements. The Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services at USU ranks 10th nationally among education colleges for external research funding. Completion of all major requirements leads to a degree. For a BA degree, students must additionally demonstrate competency in one or more foreign languages.
