Our Geology and Geophysics MS programs aim to cultivate graduates capable of conducting pioneering research as professionals in both industry and government sectors. We equip MS candidates with advanced scientific communication skills, enabling them to engage effectively with specialists and the broader public alike. The Department of Geology and Geophysics has established these key objectives for its MS curriculum:
MS candidates will obtain a rigorous graduate education featuring specialized, up-to-date technical training in their primary field that's both practical and tailored to individual needs.
High-achieving MS graduates will possess the qualifications to gain admission to PhD programs at leading institutions globally.
Graduates meeting academic standards will be equipped for professional entry-level roles within their chosen field and related disciplines.
Upon program acceptance, students undergo preliminary advising to assess any academic gaps and establish necessary remedial coursework, which must be completed with a B grade or higher during initial graduate studies.
All Geology and Geophysics MS students must pass a qualifying examination by their second term. Department-specific exam details are available through the departmental office. Unsatisfactory performance may lead to program dismissal.
A faculty committee will assess the thesis and administer the final examination, which includes a thesis presentation, defense, and responses to related topic questions. Failure may result in dismissal, with retake options determined by the graduate committee.
