The Political Science 5-Year Combined B.A./M.A. Program enables exceptional UW undergraduates to start graduate studies while finishing their bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.), allowing them to obtain a graduate degree more quickly. Eligible political science majors maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher in their major courses may receive application invitations during their junior year's second semester.
Applicants must submit an application with two recommendation letters (including at least one from a political science professor), along with unofficial UW transcripts, for evaluation by the M.A. Director and Committee. Students granted provisional admission during junior year must complete the GRE examination. Final admission to the M.A. program depends on GRE results and occurs after bachelor's degree completion.
Provisional acceptance into this accelerated program permits students to count up to six 5000-level course credits toward both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Graduate credit requires a minimum 3.000 grade. Completing graduate-level coursework as seniors demonstrates readiness for advanced study, facilitating the transition into the Political Science Master's Program. Students may also reserve six additional graduate credits (not counting toward undergraduate requirements) by following the Registrar's procedures for reserving graduate coursework before enrollment.
