The Department of Modern and Classical Languages provides undergraduate programs culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree, with major and minor options available in French, German, and Spanish. Students can also pursue minors in Classical Civilizations, Chinese, Latin, and Japanese, while a Master of Arts is offered in Spanish. The curriculum encompasses literature, linguistics, and translation studies. For students entering before Fall 2015, the College of Arts and Sciences mandates completion of 8 semester hours in one modern or classical language to earn a B.A. or B.S. degree. Those with previous language experience may qualify for college credit through an online departmental exam, which must be taken prior to registering for language courses (see the Credit Available to Undergraduate Students section for exam credit policies). Advanced Placement (AP) scores of 4 or above, along with qualifying CLEP and IB results, typically fulfill the language requirement (refer to the Credit by Examination details on the department's website).
