The Master of Architecture I (M.Arch I) is an NAAB-accredited professional degree that equips graduates for architectural licensure. Beyond this core purpose, our M.Arch I curriculum cultivates creative professionals who emerge as design innovators and industry leaders across multiple disciplines including sustainable architecture, urban planning, construction management, and community development in Milwaukee and surrounding regions. The program features two distinct pathways tailored for students with or without prior architecture undergraduate degrees.

Our M.Arch programs attract candidates from varied academic, professional, and personal experiences - diversity we actively embrace and nurture at SARUP. This inclusive approach aligns with our dedication to educational accessibility: through initiatives like the Midwest Student Exchange and Minnesota Reciprocity agreements, we provide cost-effective graduate architecture education to a broad student population. Exceptional non-Wisconsin applicants may qualify for in-state tuition rates via our annual merit-based scholarship program, which automatically considers all out-of-state candidates during the admissions process.

Qualification Requirements

An applicant with an undergraduate degree in a field other than architecture is normally admitted with two semesters of foundation courses (30 credits) required.

Admission to the 3 year program requires, in addition to general Graduate School requirements, an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale), submission of test results from the General Test portion of the Graduate Record Examination (and TOEFL or IELTS, for international students), three letters of recommendation, and a portfolio of written and/or visual work.

For international applicants whose first language is not English, a minimum TOEFL score of 100 iBT, or a score of 7.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam is required. Applicants with TOEFL scores from 79-99 iBT, or an IELTS score of 6.5 will be considered for admission only with the stipulation that further coursework in English be taken.
