The Mathematics Education specialization combines mathematical teaching expertise with urban education studies, equipping graduates to tackle key challenges in diverse learning environments through mathematics education research. The School of Education provides an interdisciplinary PhD program where students select from specializations including Adult, Continuing, and Higher Education Leadership; Art Education; Curriculum and Instruction; Educational Administration; Exceptional Education; Mathematics Education; Multicultural Studies; or Social Foundations of Education.
This flexible program allows students to align their specialized academic interests with broader educational fields, particularly urban education. All specializations (except Multicultural Studies) are department-based, requiring students to meet specific admission and curriculum criteria for their chosen focus. Successful completion results in the specialization being formally noted on the student's academic transcript.
