The UWM Linguistics program provides undergraduate students with options for either a major (30 credits) or minor (18 credits). The major features two distinct pathways: General Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. The General track emphasizes fundamental aspects of theoretical linguistics (phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics), while offering flexibility to incorporate experimental approaches and elective courses, including advanced foreign language studies. The Applied track maintains the theoretical foundation while incorporating specialized coursework in language instruction and teaching methodologies. Both the major and minor programs complement various academic disciplines like Psychology, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Computer Science, Philosophy, Anthropology, and foreign language studies. Students must complete 120 total credits, with 90 credits in the College of Letters & Science, including 36 upper-level (300+) L&S courses. The College mandates that at least 15 upper-division (300+) major credits be completed at UWM. Additionally, students must fulfill University General Education Requirements and specific L&S requirements.
Major completion requires adherence to all catalog requirements. Students declaring their major within five years of entering the UW System may follow any catalog published during their enrollment. Courses counting toward the major may also satisfy other degree requirements.
