French serves as an official language in numerous countries worldwide, such as France, Canada, Gabon, Haiti, Belgium, Senegal, Switzerland, and Cameroon, among others. Additionally, French functions as a cultural, communicative, and commercial lingua franca in many other nations. With over 300 million speakers, it ranks as the fifth most spoken language globally.
At UWM, French students gain international awareness and deeper insights into worldwide cultural diversity. Earning a French degree opens doors to diverse career paths in fields like business, finance, technology, marketing, journalism, translation, hospitality, architecture, engineering, the arts, government, and beyond.
Progressing through the French curriculum enhances students' fluency while enabling them to examine the cultures, arts, societies, literature, history, and politics of Francophone communities globally. Nearly all French courses at UWM involve reading, writing, and discussions conducted entirely in French. Many French students choose to study abroad in Francophone nations, discovering that cultural and linguistic immersion offers profoundly rewarding academic and personal growth. Advanced French speakers entering UWM can complete both bachelor's and master's degrees in just five years (rather than six) in French and Francophone literatures and cultures or in Translation and Interpretation.
