Around 500 Japanese American businesses are active in Michigan. These organizations seek employees with specialized language abilities and comprehensive understanding of cross-cultural skills. Eastern Michigan University's Bachelor of Arts in Language and International Trade - Japanese (LIT) combines modern Japanese language and cultural studies with a business minor. The program mandates a semester of overseas study in Japan. The Japanese and International Trade (LIT) major at EMU equips students with essential competencies for global professional settings. Participants develop communication and negotiation skills for diverse cultural contexts. The curriculum includes a business minor alongside core courses. Students also complete international experiences, including internships through the Japan Center for Michigan University in Shiga, Japan, and may pursue local internships with Michigan firms. Graduates of the Japanese and International Trade (LIT) program hold positions across various sectors including sales, management, and finance, working for organizations like Japanese American automotive companies, logistics firms, and U.S. businesses engaged in international commerce.
