The program provides Master of Arts degrees in Portuguese & Spanish, along with a Doctor of Philosophy majoring in Portuguese & Spanish. Students can also pursue a doctoral minor in either Spanish or Portuguese, requiring nine credits of graduate coursework.
Our integrated curriculum covers Portuguese and Spanish languages, literatures, and linguistics, equipping master's and PhD graduates for careers in teaching and research. Faculty research advances knowledge in these fields, while a rotating selection of courses ensures comprehensive study opportunities. All classes are taught in Portuguese or Spanish.

Qualification Requirements
Applicants must have an undergraduate major in Portuguese at UWMadison or its equivalent.
Applicants with a bachelor of arts (BA) in Portuguese must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), and a GPA in Portuguese courses of at least 3.25. Exceptions to these requirements may be made by the admissions committee.
A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or a comparable degree from an international institution is required.
A minimum undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours (approximately two years of work) or a master's degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required. Applicants from an international institution must demonstrate strong academic achievement comparable to a 3.00 for an undergraduate or master's degree.
Minimum TOEFL requirement- 92 internet (iBT), 580 paper-based test (PBT)
