This cross-disciplinary program unites experts from diverse fields including sociology, law, political science, economics, and history, all focused on sociolegal theory and empirical studies. As a pioneering hub for law and society research in the United States, Wisconsin has fostered a dynamic academic community in this interdisciplinary field for many years. The foundational course is Sociology 641 (Sociology of Law), with both the Sociology Department and Law School offering advanced seminars like Sociology 930 (Socio-Legal Studies). The Law School's Institute for Legal Studies frequently hosts relevant seminars and colloquia. Qualified students can pursue a combined J.D.-Ph.D. degree upon acceptance to both the Sociology Department and Law School.
