Southeast Asian history has been a key academic focus in our department since its inception in the mid-1960s. Our faculty specializes in contemporary Southeast Asian studies, with particular expertise in Philippine political and social history (encompassing U.S. foreign relations and intelligence activities), regional narcotics networks, Buddhist philosophy and reform movements, colonial-era Buddhism, and the intersection of religion with visual arts.
Both professors and students actively participate in UW-Madison's Center for Southeast Asian Studies, a federally designated National Resource Center supported by Title VI and FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) grants. The Center additionally operates SEASSI (Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute), an intensive eight-week language immersion program.
