Established by trailblazing historians Philip Curtin and Jan Vansina, UW-Madison's African History program has consistently ranked among the world's top programs. Key campus assets supporting African historical research include the African Studies Program, one of America's select Title VI National Resource Centers for Africa. Under Emilie Songolo's leadership, the University Library boasts exceptional collections, featuring an expanding array of digital materials in its African Studies Collection. Wisconsin has educated over a hundred African history specialists, encompassing prominent field leaders, emerging young academics, and a record number of recipients of the prestigious Herskovits Prize for outstanding African Studies publications.
The program excels particularly in pre-colonial and contemporary East African studies, African diaspora research, colonial and global impact studies, as well as the historical examination of healthcare, medical practices, and scientific developments across Africa.
