The genetics graduate program focuses on advanced study and research culminating in a PhD. Its mission is to prepare future genetics professionals by admitting top university graduates and teaching them genetic analysis techniques. These skills are becoming increasingly vital in modern biological and biomedical studies.
PhD candidates select a faculty advisor after completing lab rotations during their first semester. Students typically rotate through three or four faculty labs before mutually agreeing on a thesis advisor with their chosen mentor. The curriculum emphasizes building comprehensive genetics knowledge through coursework, followed by personalized research projects guided by the advisor. While formal course requirements are minimal, the program prioritizes independent research and original scholarship. Each student forms a thesis committee that oversees academic progress and offers scientific and career guidance throughout their doctoral studies.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
