As an organism grows, numerous cellular and molecular processes coordinate to form a fully functional plant or animal. Disruptions to this typical developmental sequence may lead to abnormal tissue that could negatively impact the mature organism. Throughout development, shifting patterns of gene activity guide cellular specialization, while intercellular signaling simultaneously directs the expansion of cells and tissues. This developmental process resembles an intricate cellular ballet, where cells forge lasting communication pathways and relationships that frequently endure for the organism's entire lifespan.
