String graduates consistently earn scholarships to prestigious conservatory graduate programs. Numerous alumni hold positions in renowned orchestras, perform with world-class string quartets, teach at leading universities, and have triumphed in elite international competitions. String students tend to be exceptionally imaginative and inquisitive, frequently opting for dual degrees—an approach wholeheartedly encouraged by faculty.
Every string student benefits from weekly private instruction and masterclasses with their principal professor, supplemented by regular masterclasses featuring guest artists. Notable recent visitors have included Pinchas Zukerman, Rachel Barton, Nobuko Imai, Samuel Rhodes, Mark Kosower, Leon Fleisher, and Charles Neidich. In October 2017, David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted an extended residency featuring multiple performance workshops and a collaborative concert with UWMadison Strings.
