The Scandinavian Studies program enables students to explore Nordic literature, folklore, history, and culture through both original languages and English translations. Collaborating with other departments, we provide instruction in Scandinavian languages, history, cultural traditions, social structures, gender studies, arts, mythology, and folk traditions.
Graduates can pursue advanced degrees, including an MA in Scandinavian linguistics, literature, or regional studies, or a PhD focusing on Scandinavian literature, linguistics, or folklore. The department actively promotes study abroad during junior year, with multiple exchange opportunities in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and other Nordic locations. Applicants may also consider Norden House, a language immersion living community in Adams Residence Hall for UW students studying Norwegian, Danish, or Swedish.
