The Japanese studies program provides learners with diverse courses and experiences to develop their cross-cultural skills. After finishing the four foundational years of language instruction, students will gain proficiency in everyday Japanese conversation. Program participants can specialize in advanced Japanese linguistics or literary studies. Students also have the option to pair their Japan-focused studies with majors like commerce, technology, historical research, or global affairs.

We recommend that majors start their academic journey early, preferably during their first or second year. For those unable to do so, accelerated summer programs at UWMadison or other institutions can help students catch up. Learners with prior Japanese knowledge may qualify for higher-level courses through departmental approval.
