This program examines how genetic material influences life across scales, from individual cells to entire populations, equipping students to address critical societal issues in medicine, biotechnology, biomedical research, and agriculture. Genetics and genomics play a central role in contemporary discussions about genetic testing, therapies, genome sequencing, evolutionary processes, and the genetic modification of organisms.
Genetics and genomics majors study core subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, and introductory genetics before exploring specialized areas including human genetics, plant genetics, population genetics, cancer biology, developmental biology, neuroscience, and epigenetics. They develop hands-on research skills through lab courses and independent projects in faculty research laboratories.
The major establishes strong career foundations across diverse fields such as healthcare, public health, scientific research, agriculture, biotechnology, education, legal professions, and science journalism in various sectors. Numerous graduates continue their education through advanced degree programs, including PhD research, medical studies, veterinary medicine, and legal education. Alumni pursue careers as healthcare providers, genetic specialists, public health experts, research professionals, agricultural scientists, educators, legal professionals, and science communicators.
Applicant must have high school record should demonstrate both rigor and breadth in the types of course work you pursue. A competitive academic record should show some of the most challenging advanced-level work offered at or through your school in as many areas as possible, while maintaining a strong GPA. The following chart shows the number of years that most admitted students studied in each subject area; English 4 years, Math 4 years, Social Studies 3-4 years, Science 3-4 years, Single Foreign Language 3-4 years and Additional Academic/Fine Arts 2 years. Applicant must have ACT score of 30 and overall SAT score of 1395.
