The Elementary Education and Special Education (EESE) program offers a distinctive path for students seeking dual certification in both Elementary and Special Education. Graduates earn credentials for teaching general education from kindergarten through 9th grade (including 4K eligibility) and Special Education from kindergarten through 12th grade (up to age 21), opening doors to diverse career options in both educational settings.
For decades, the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education has been committed to developing professionals who enhance quality of life for individuals with disabilities. The EESE curriculum trains educators to champion fairness, inclusion, and accessibility across all classroom environments. Program alumni gain the skills to establish welcoming educational spaces where they can recognize and overcome learning obstacles while supporting every student's needs.
Beyond classroom instruction, participants gain real-world teaching experience through placements in both general and special education settings at various grade levels. The program includes one general education practicum with student teaching and one special education practicum with student teaching, ensuring comprehensive preparation for teaching in either K-9 general education or K-12 special education classrooms. These experiences help future educators develop the ability to work with diverse learners and cultivate academic and social-emotional growth for all students.
