The field of atmospheric and oceanic sciences examines every facet of our planet's air and water systems, their interconnected dynamics, and how they interact with space and Earth's broader ecosystem. While weather prediction remains a key focus, this discipline encompasses far more: analyzing fluid motions across all scales, investigating past and present climate patterns, studying atmospheric chemistry and air quality, examining cloud formations and precipitation processes, and exploring solar and terrestrial radiation. Modern remote-sensing technologies, particularly satellite systems, now enable researchers to observe circulation patterns from global to local perspectives.
Introductory courses in atmospheric and oceanic sciences often fulfill natural science requirements for undergraduate students. Those with strong mathematics and physics backgrounds may pursue advanced coursework to supplement their primary studies in other scientific disciplines. Majors gain foundational knowledge through core curriculum covering atmospheric and oceanic physics and dynamics, followed by specialized senior-year electives. These specialized tracks focus on weather systems, earth/environmental science, or general/applied atmospheric studies, with customizable course selections. The program prepares students for diverse career paths including weather forecasting, environmental consulting, media broadcasting, or advanced graduate studies leading to research and academic opportunities.
Applicant must have high school record should demonstrate both rigor and breadth in the types of course work you pursue. A competitive academic record should show some of the most challenging advanced-level work offered at or through your school in as many areas as possible, while maintaining a strong GPA. The following chart shows the number of years that most admitted students studied in each subject area; English 4 years, Math 4 years, Social Studies 3-4 years, Science 3-4 years, Single Foreign Language 3-4 years and Additional Academic/Fine Arts 2 years. Applicant must have ACT score of 30 and overall SAT score of 1395.
