String graduates consistently earn scholarships to prestigious conservatory graduate programs. Numerous alumni hold positions in renowned orchestras, perform with world-class string quartets, teach at leading universities, and have triumphed in elite international competitions. Our string students demonstrate exceptional creativity and intellectual curiosity, frequently pursuing dual degrees—an approach enthusiastically encouraged by faculty.
Every string student benefits from weekly private lessons and masterclasses with their principal instructor, supplemented by regular masterclasses featuring distinguished guest artists. Recent visiting artists have included luminaries like Pinchas Zukerman, Rachel Barton Pine, Nobuko Imai, Samuel Rhodes, Mark Kosower, Leon Fleisher, and Charles Neidich. In October 2017, David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted an immersive residency featuring masterclasses and collaborative performances with UW-Madison Strings.
