The Scandinavian Studies program enables students to explore Nordic literature, folklore, history, and culture through both original languages and English translations. In collaboration with various departments, we provide instruction in Scandinavian languages, historical studies, cultural traditions, social structures, gender and women's studies, artistic expressions, mythology, and folk traditions.
The program also prepares students for advanced degrees, offering pathways to MA programs in Scandinavian philology, literary studies, or regional studies, as well as PhD opportunities in Scandinavian literature, language studies, or folklore. We highly recommend spending junior year abroad in a Nordic nation, with multiple exchange options available in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and other locations. Participants can also apply for Norden House, a language immersion living community in Adams Residence Hall designed for University of Washington students focusing on Norwegian, Danish, or Swedish.
