The University of Wisconsin–Madison's Department of African American Studies provides an interdisciplinary approach to exploring Black history, culture, and societal structures. Students engage with both historical and contemporary issues central to the African American experience through critical analysis. The department features an undergraduate major, certificate program, and a tailored MA program designed to prepare students for doctoral studies in fields like English and History through specialized "Bridge" initiatives. Both faculty and students participate in diverse community engagements, from hip-hop outreach for youth to adult education programs and public history initiatives.
