This specialization is provided through collaboration between the Department of Biology, the Department of Microbiology, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, Marshfield Laboratories/St. Joseph's Hospital/Marshfield Clinic, and the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene. The curriculum combines on-campus classes with hands-on clinical training at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center, Marshfield Laboratories/St. Joseph's Hospital/Marshfield Clinic, and the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene. Graduates of the clinical microbiology program qualify for the Specialist Microbiologist (SM-AAM) certification from the American Academy of Microbiology. Through integrated coursework, clinical practice, and research components, students gain preparation for diverse career paths such as:
Leadership roles in healthcare facilities, public health labs, and private diagnostic laboratories
Research-oriented careers in educational institutions, government organizations, or corporate sectors
Infection prevention roles in healthcare environments
Public health surveillance and disease investigation
Product promotion and sales within pharmaceutical or biotech companies, and
Instructional positions at community colleges or vocational schools.
