The Department of Global Cultures and Languages at UWL is dedicated to fostering both professional and personal development for our students. We achieve this by equipping students with the skills to communicate across cultures with sensitivity and awareness in multiple languages. Together, students and faculty explore the traditions, customs, and viewpoints of diverse cultures. Through hands-on learning experiences—including study abroad programs, internships, community initiatives, and teacher preparation—we enable students to apply their cultural understanding, linguistic abilities, analytical skills, and leadership qualities to promote social justice in our evolving local, national, and global communities.
Our department provides degree programs in French, German studies, and Spanish (including education tracks for French and Spanish), along with minors in Chinese studies, proficiency certificates in French and Chinese, specialized programs in Russian studies and Spanish for healthcare, and coursework in Arabic, Japanese, and Hmong.
Students wishing to advance in a language previously studied in high school must complete the UW System Foreign Language Placement Test to determine the correct course level. While proper placement based on test results may qualify students for retroactive credits, this outcome is not automatic.
