The Professional Director Training Program faculty seeks aspiring directors who show exceptional talent and strong potential to master the essential skills of top-tier theatre direction. We welcome students with a natural ability for visual storytelling, an understanding of actors' and designers' creative processes, and a deep enthusiasm for concepts, language, visual arts, and music—along with substantial knowledge of dramatic literature and theory. In essence, we aim to cultivate the next generation of visionary directors. The University of Washington School of Drama's Directing Program offers a rigorous three-year conservatory-style curriculum, equipping students for professional theatre careers. Our approach centers on the belief that aspiring directors learn best by directing under the mentorship of experienced faculty.
Coursework and training encompass diverse dramatic forms and styles, from realism to experimental, classical to contemporary. The program's core objective is to equip students with practical techniques to fully unlock a script's artistic possibilities. By graduation, we expect them to excel in collaborating with actors and designers. Additionally, we empower students to develop their artistic vision, fostering a lifelong commitment to realizing and expressing their creative ideas with impact.
The program, which accepts only two candidates, chooses applicants who show evidence of accomplishment “out in the world,” who may have successfully assisted seasoned directors, and who have at least the beginning of a professional and artistic record. It is extremely difficult to gain admission directly out of a BA program with no other credentials.
